At ELAN HAIR DESIGN LTD in Inverurie they have become the greenest salon in the UK and are representing Scotland as it bids to retain a prestigious British Chamber Award. The salon has spent £250,000 on becoming environmentally friendly. (Aberdeen Business News 2013)

3.2 Green Business Practice
For businesses running a green business practice makes sense, businesses benefit by changing their ways now. As they reduce environmental impacts they are more profitable by saving costs, valuable and competitive giving them a better reputation.
Consumers are more attracted to a company that is seen taking measures to protect the environment and also the well-being of their staff and is continually reviewing its methods reducing emissions that harm the environment. (Chron 2014)
Élan hair design have recently been certified from Green Ticks which is a cost effective environmental management system which monitors environmental areas to control areas such as water, waste and energy, in turn, reducing costs and manages environmental risks.

3.2.1 Disposable Materials

Élan Hair Design have made the decision to single use towels instead of using normal towels that need washed after every use. The new towels are made by scrimmi and are 100% recycled and biodegradable. Once the towels have been used they recycle them by disposing of them reasonably which in turn creates a high quality compost.

3.2.2 Source of Energy

Installing LED lights in a salon saves energy and also reduces electricity costs. Also benefitting clients and hairdressers as the lighting inside is exactly the same as daylight outside of the salon, giving stylists more confidence keeping clients happy as they can see the exact hair colour. Having LED lighting in the salons reception area helps deliver further savings.

3.2.3 Natural Hair Products

Élan uses ecofriendly hair products from Aveda, a company which has a proven track record of safety and efficacy, which helps the environment as they do not produce synthetic petro chemicals into the air and are completely bio gradable which helps the environment and the well-being of their clients. They do not test on animals; also all their plastic bottles are recyclable.

3.2.4 Recycling

Élan Hair Design items are separated for recycling. The items that are recycled are:

By doing this it has prevented 95% of the salon waste from ending up on a landfill site. One stop waste has provided the business with two bins, one for recycling and the other for residual waste. The bins are emptied every two weeks. Any items that are in the residual bins that the salon has missed will be removed by one stop waste and placed for recycling.
