Industrial sustainability involves the “need to better understand how to respond to environmental, social and economic challenges and transform industrial behaviour,” as cited from http://www.ifm.eng.cam.ac.uk/research/industrial-sustainability/
It’s fair to assume that any qualified engineer could produce a product, but a better engineer will thrive to be more innovative and produce the same thing with greater efficiency. If resources are used carefully, the future generations’ share would not be compromised, especially with regard to non-renewable resources such as fossil fuels. Dr. Zhen Gu of North Carolina State University has developed a “New Technique Targets Specific Areas of Cancer Cells with Different Drugs.” This Is one in many examples of engineering applications has transformed medical devices and help address challenges that, perhaps doctors knowledge alone could have not solved. “This research is our first proof of concept, and we will continue to optimize the technique to make it even more efficient,” Gu says. “The early results are very promising, and we think this could be scaled up for large-scale manufacturing.” Medicine industry has its own set of ethics such as Justice, Beneficence, Non-maleficence, Respect for autonomy and many others. Large scale manufacturing mainly targets the ethic of justice (“fair distribution of scarce healthcare resources, “says Michelle L. Oyen of the University of Cambridge). With many devices produced with efficiency, the allocation shall come at a low price and many will consequently have access.
However, with all these inventions and innovates; sometimes it is crucial for the change to be gradual or come at stages, with aim to keep the industry sustainable. The logic for this is that if a completely new product is made, the production methods have to change entirely, and this might come at a huge cost, both monetary and risk-wise. Engineers are very good at bringing sustainable products in stages. “Narrow-body airliners, unlike wide body aircraft, fly short-haul flights and operate many more take-offs and landings each day. This requires a more robust airframe to withstand the stress of multiple daily take-offs and landings, as well as the pressurization cycles and the inherent stresses on the aircraft.” To crack this challenge, Aluminium-lithium alloy was introduced, which is really at par with composites; the main advantage is that Aluminium-lithium has “significantly improved corrosion...
