Teaching Philosophy Statement
Teaching is an art that requires a lot of knowledge, skills and techniques, taught with passion and enthusiasm. It is satisfying to see my students make progress. The career gives peace of mind, while constantly posing new challenges. A good English teacher has to be able to guide the learners to succeed in using the language fluently and comfortably in both academic and real world settings, despite the learners’ types of learning, intelligences, personalities, genders and ages. However, to fulfill this high ambition, I have to (1) be competent with the language, (2) be competent with teaching, and (3) know my students. Audio visual learning is appropriate for young learners as they want to see or hear something new that makes sense to them. Through this style of learning, they have better intake of the language; they can hear the word, then see the image, then learn that what is spoken can be written and what is written can be read/spoken out. As for role playing, I usually restrict the activities to teacher-students, because the learners are too young to be organized or able to carry out the task by themselves. However, sometimes I can set a game that relates some student-student interaction such as number-counting, in which a student on the right has to read the next number (or the next letter of the alphabets), or say ‘hello’ to the child on the left. This method of teaching requires a lot of preparation, such as videos, songs, flash cards, story books, real objects, and slides. I also use English as often as possible, to the point that I only speak Vietnamese when I have to.

Unlike preschoolers, secondary school students are more advanced in learning styles. They are capable of learning abstract concepts, and grammar rules are understandable through explanation – an approach that can not be used on the younger group. My students are ESL learners who go to international schools. They have fluent oral skill and adequately succeed in social settings; however, what they need to improve are their skills in academic settings. I work as an ESL tutor with these students, and my objective is to help them have strong academic English in content areas. Thus, I have adopted the Content Based Approach. This approach targets topics related to school subjects with rich contents, high standards of language, and requires critical thinking skills. According to Cummins (1996), there are two levels of proficiency: “basic interpersonal conversational skills (BICS)” – which are achieved after two to three years, and the higher level of proficiency is “cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP)” – which takes five to seven years to reach. Therefore, they need my help to improve their CALP requirements. I teach them how to read and understand textbooks, do cognitively tasks such as writing essays, report and research papers, involving in discussion and debates, and performing presentations at school.
