Conflict has a tendency escalate quickly and into two very different directions. These types of conflict are usually considered positive or negative conflict. These types of conflict can escalate into a format that can lead to great productivity or it can lead into a format that can and sometimes will stop productivity all together for a team. Positive conflict can be healthy for the team as it promotes growth and development. This type of conflict should be welcomed and viewed as the first stepping stone to the team’s path to success. Positive conflict can lead to the team developing new ideas, more creative solutions to problems, working together to meet a common goal or outcome, clarify the main objectives, and jumpstart the team if they have gotten stuck on a specific topic or unable to proceed forward with a process. The benefits of positive conflict are great and can be very rewarding if the team not only accepts and recognizes it as a positive but also initiates and applies their new and improved changes. Negative conflict on the other hand can translate as very bad thing for a team and can have adverse affects on any and all progress. The main reason for negative conflict is usually no communication amongst the team members. This type of conflict can lead to breakdown in communication, lack of respect, lack of trust or openness, a lack of contribution, a lack of confidence, a lack of developing any type of new ideas or process solutions, personal attacks, miscommunication, and in some cases sabotage of the project. Once this type of conflict is present it becomes difficult for a team to get back on track. These types of conflict can sometimes be attributed to things such as different views, difference in personalities, different experiences or education levels, and sometime different moral or cultural perspectives. When these types of barriers are present, difficulty with progress of the project will ensue which can lead to the inability to meet or set deadlines and can prohibit the production of quality work. (Porter J.D., 2003, ¶ 2) These types of barriers are detrimental to the team’s future and success. It is important that the team not allow these types of barriers to manifest. To reduce the chances of these barriers team members should be open minded, flexible to change, be mindful and respectful of others thoughts and ideas, and communicate. Although these types of conflicts or difficulties can sometimes make it difficult for a team to get back on track, it is not at all impossible. Hard work and dedication can set the team back on the path that was set out. The team has to have the drive and determination that is needed to move forward and reach and exceed the goals that they...
