The Differences in Mormon Religion
Though they both share the Mormon name, Mormons and Fundamentalist Mormons have differences on several points, including views of Joseph Smith, The Priesthood, and Polygamy.
Joseph Smith is a prophet of the Mormon Religion that founded The Church of Jesus Christ. The church was founded in Fayette, New York, on April 6, 1830. According to Packham (2011), when Joseph Smith began looking what religion to join he prayed and asked for guidance from God. God, the Father and God, the Son appeared to him in a vision known as “The First Vision”, who told him that ...view middle of the document...

One of the doctrines both churches shared was not allowing the Black Race to be in the priesthood until 1978. The Mormon Religion believe Blacks are descendants of Cain who was cursed with dark skin when Cain rebelled against God and killed his brother Abel. According to McConkie (1958), “As a result of his rebellion, Cain was cursed with a dark skin; he became the father of the Negroes, and those spirits who are not worthy to receive the priesthood are born through his lineage He became the first mortal to be cursed as a son of perdition.” In June 1978 the LDS Church President Spencer W. Kimball announced that God, by revelation, will now allow Black worthy males to enter priesthood and receive “blessings of the temple” (Desert News, 06/09/78, 1A). The FLDS Church still follows the original doctrine of not allowing the black race into the priesthood. In summary, both religions use The Priesthood authority to lead the Church but the FLDS Church still will not allow the “seed of Cain” into priesthood authority.
One of the doctrinal beliefs early in The Mormon Religion was plural marriage also known as polygamy. Joseph Smith is believed to have married 34 women the youngest only being 14 years old (http://www.wivesofjosephsmith.org/). When polygamy first began it was not only men having multiple wives but wives having multiple husbands. Many of Joseph Smiths wives had a second husband (http://www.wivesofjosephsmith.org/). Polygamy was openly practiced in LDS community until 1890. In 1890, President and Prophet Wilford Woodruff prayed for guidance when The United States passed a law that banned polygamy and began prosecuting families. Wilford Woodruff through revelation of God then banned polygamy known as The Manifesto and said all people practicing polygamy would be excommunicated from LDS Church (Encyclopedia of Mormonism, Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University, 1992.) The FLDS believe that banning polygamy was a declaration not a revelation of God; government pressure, not faith, was the...
