Niankhkhnum and Khnumhotep are the first gay couple known in history. Their tomb was found in 1964 by Archaeologists in Egypt. They were dated back to 2380 to 2320 B.C. (NY Times, 2005). Therefore, it’s clear that homosexuality is not a new thing; it’s not a phase that goes out with time. Homosexuality is controversial among people with different ages and different backgrounds; for instance, Harvey Milk was elected as a member of San Francisco Board of supervisors. On the other hand, according to Dr. Neil Whitehead and Briar Whitehead, Bob is a former gay man whose father was sick and never around. He grew up with homosexual feelings; hence, he had a lover for two years as a teenager. Two years later, all the feelings disappeared: “As I look back now I see that part of the reason was that I was working with my father and having regular time with him for the first time in my life. I didn’t realize what was going on, but a need was being met in my life, that I didn’t know was there. I didn’t struggle with homosexuality at that point.” Bob was having a better relationship with his mother, and he believes his homosexuality was a result of the search to man’s attention. Crime Victim Services stated that in 1999, there were 1,960 separate incidents against homosexuals, bisexuals, and transgender people. These incidents impacted more than 2,000 persons; of the total incidents, 765 were reported to law enforcement; however, 10% didn’t make a report, 73% took the report but made no arrest, and arrested people in 17%. (National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, 2000). Even though the percentage of homicides has declined by the year of 1999, it increased against homosexuals by 12%. (National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, 2000).
Joan Garry, a lesbian parent and an author, made a survey in Essex County, NJ about gay parents, and some of the comment were : “I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. Those poor kids. I bet they get rideculed to no end in school.” And “Why plaster the kids faces all over the paper when it will single them out. Keep your business to yourself. Being selfish about your "situation" could set your kids up for abuse. Real parents put their kids first…” and “The only lesbian parents that should be allowed are young hot blondes.” (Joan Garry, the Huffing Post, 2009). Some of the major stereotypes are: gay men are often feminists, and they’re embraced in certain professions such as: fashion, interior design, and hair styling. Lesbians on the other hand are more masculine, and they’re more likely to like sports and military. However, these stereotypes are not always true. For example, the owners of the Prada Grusel hair salon in New York City are straight, but people think they’re gay because they like hair styling. (John Stossel and Gena Binkley, ABC news, 2006)
