THE WORLD IN 2014: GEOPOLITICAL TRENDS AND DEVELOPMENTS

In the year 2014, the world will continue to be characterized by a mixture of peaceful processes, political and economic developments and problems, geopolitical differences and conflicts, challenges and adjustments. Some of the most important trends and developments are outlined here below.
The global economy is expected to show a growth rate of around 2.5 - 3%. The USA will have a rate of growth of 2.5 â€“ 2.7%, China 7% and the Eurozone 1%. (OECD). However the U.S. cannot ignore, neither the statements by Putin that, if needed, he will move more drastically to keep Ukraine and other former Soviet republics in the Russian sphere of influence, nor that Washington needs Moscow's cooperation on critical issues such as Iran and Syria.
Turkey, after the agreement of the so-called P5 +1 on Iran last year, she is now faced with a historic geopolitical rival, who will be less restricted in its movements. However, given the critical internal issues Ankara is facing, she is expected to take a more introspective policy â€“ in view of the forthcoming elections - showing perhaps a more conciliatory attitude towards Iran, but at the same time a more rigid stance on national issues for internal consumption.
The rewarming of Turkish â€“ Israeli relations will continue to be an issue for Washingtonâ€™s and Tel Avivâ€™s interest again this year.
