546 words - 3 pages

Doug Warbrick and Brian singer first started Rip Curl during the 60's.The company originally was making surfboards and did quite well in the highly competitive market of the time, but in the 70's, they made a change they took them from a good company, and made them into a great company. They saw the needs of the surfers, and knowing what the surfers wanted, ventured into making wetsuits. Watches were another business opportunity that the company seized in a bid to stay in the market, which were released about the same time as the Rip Curl Mountainwear (Late 80's).Going international is a decision that almost every business faces if their products are good enough, and thankfully with all the pro surfers from other countries spreading the Rip Curl word, it was a lot easier for Rip Curl to enter the international market. The first thing that went overseas were the wetsuits. In 1978 Brian Singer traveled to California to try selling the product, it was a success. He returned to the little shop in Torquay with a bundle of orders and for the next few years. On yet another stroke of luck, a Frenchman who wanted to be a seller for Rip Curl in France approached Brian while in California, which helped to extend the market for Rip Curl. The business, unlike many others, is run in a very informal manner. There is no strict dress code and the managers help to make and improve the products whereas some managers these days usually sit and just tell people what to do. When managers help the smaller employees, it really improves the quality of work and morale because the people know that someone actually does care about quality and not just making money. You can tell from the company mission statement that Rip Curl are not just about making money, its quality of the product and about the best you can buy and also about trust in the customer so that they will come back to the products again.
