They were around before this country was a country. The marines make this statement still have truth today with the war in Iraq."Gung-ho" is an expression the Chinese gave to American marines. In Chinese "gung-ho means working together but the marines take this expression to mean the willingness to tackle all tasks and the total loyalty and commitment to the Corps.Creeds are a big part of the Marine Corps. There are many creeds but none are as important as the Rifleman's Creed or My Rifle: The Creed of a United States Marine. Every recruit must memorize this creed because marines are riflemen before anything else. This is not just a creed like any of the others; every marine must live by it. The rifleman's creed shows that marines are trained to kill. Master General William H. Rupertus wrote this creed after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than the enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. My rifle and I know that what counts in war are not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, or the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit.My rifle is human, even as I am human, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strengths, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. Before God I swear this creed. My rifle and I are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy.Hansen 3The Drill Instructor's Creed also has a lot of significance this is the creed of the men and women who train each new recruit. These are my recruits. I will train them to the best of my ability. I will develop them into smartly disciplined, physically fit, basically trained Marines, thoroughly indoctrinated in love of Corps and country. I will demand of them, and demonstrate by my own example, the highest standards of personal conduct, morality, and professional skill. This creed came about after a drill instructor took his platoon for a march because he thought they needed more discipline. They came to a creek where the drill instructor shouted, "Anyone who can't swim will drown! Any one who can swim will be eaten by the sharks!" Six recruits drowned. This creed is to ensure that no drill instructor will do this to their recruits again. It was published on 31 August 1956.The marines' prayer is said to be the answer to any problem in any situation. In an interview with Joseph DeAugustine he stated that "...without the marines prayer I don't thin I could have made it for a year without talking to or seeing my family..." For a...
