1.Know the main forms of mental ill health.

1.1 The main types of mental ill health according to the psychiatric classification system are:-

•Mood disorders, these are mental health problems such as depression, bipolar or mania.

•Personality disorders, are conditions when an individual differs significantly from an average person in terms of how they think, feel or behave to others.

•Anxiety disorders, are when an individual has feelings of unease, such as worry or fear these can be mild or severe.

1.3 There are two alternative frameworks for understanding mental distress, these are biological and medical frameworks and behavioural frameworks.

The biological and medical framework is often referred to as the disease model. It looks at psychological causes such as brain defect, hereditary factors or the results of an accident/injury.

Behavioural frameworks are closely aligned to learning theories and have been associated with early exponents of conditioning theories, symptoms of mental distress, considered to be learnt habits arise from the interaction between external stress and the individual's personality

1.4 If an individual is experiencing ill mental health, this can be indicated through their behaviours, emotions and thinking.

A behaviour could include hoarding, they may wash their hands constantly and repeatedly check the windows and doors are locked when going out. They can also be forgetful and fail to turn up to appointments.

Emotional signs can be crying a lot, sometimes inappropriate emotions can happen for example laughing at a funeral, highs and lows of emotion can also be thought of as the individual is ‘moody’.

Another indication can be through the individual's thinking, they may have difficulty concentrating or organising their thoughts. They may also become paranoid, deluded or have denial about how bad things have got.

2. Know the impact of the mental ill health on individuals and others in their social network.

2.1 People with mental ill health sometimes feel stigmatised by their health problem, and are often discriminated against because of this.
