1. Understand diversity, equality and inclusion in own area of responsibility |
1.1 Explain models of practice that underpin equality, diversity and inclusion in own area of responsibility | The main principles which influence my work and practices at Sycamore Lodge include treating residents and staff with fairness, ensuring and equal opportunities ethic exists at all time and the respect of their rights, privacy, individuality, independence, dignity and respect. It relies on the following principles: that people function best when they are valued; that people feel valued when their individual needs and group differences are taken into account; that they can learn from differences and be empowered and that people who are empowered can work independently Either model can result in significant benefits to Sycamore. However, a model that combines the principles of Equal Opportunities to all and the celebration of differences and diversity does help foster a better workforce and create greater efficiency within the Home.In my role of Acting Manager, I am responsible for ensuring that all individuals, their families, members of staff, carers and all those I work in partnership with, are treated equally, with dignity and respect. Within the Adult care setting there is a range of policies which formally sets out guidelines and procedures for ensuring equality. The equal opportunity policy takes into account the rights of all individuals and groups within the settings (“equal opportunities model”).In my role, I promote equality and uphold individuals’ equality of opportunity, individual rights and choice, their privacy, individuality, independence, dignity and respect. I also promote equality of care, and confidentiality. In practice I support individuals whenever needed, inclusion, adapted activities and specialist equipment catering to the individual resident’s needs. I support inclusion by ensuring that all residents, whatever their background or situation, are able to participate fully in all aspects of the life in the Home. Inclusive practices ensure that everyone feels valued and has a sense of belonging. Inclusion in our settings is about providing the same opportunities and access to all activities organised in the home, and opportunities to live as fulfilling a life as if they were living in their own homes. |
1.2 Analyse the potential effects of barriers to equality and inclusion in own area of responsibility | Potential effects of barriers to equality and inclusion in my own area of Responsibility: the law and effects on organisation when barriers exist e.g. breaking the law and outcomes, self-esteem, self-concept, mental health, physical health, unsafe environment, harm and abuse; critical reflection; the cycle of oppression; learned helplessness; disempowerment, diminished life chance; social exclusion; being marginalised; poor interpersonal interactions and communication; risk assessment and case for action; new organisational structures and systems; lack of group cohesiveness; differing personalities; the media; prejudice; implications of non-compliance e.g. financial, legal, moral, health There are many barriers to diversity and inclusion.
