In 2010 the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors believed that growth would slow down by the end of 2013 which would put the growth to doubling every three years instead of every year and a half. With that in mind and based on the charts for memory and storage prices, you could get around double the space every three years for the same price.
In 2010 for 100 dollars you could buy 4GB of RAM, now in 2015 you can buy 8GB of RAM for the same price. That’s actually moving a little slower than doubling every three years but for the sake of simplicity we’ll go with every three years. So if you could buy 4GB in 2010 and 8GB here in 2015 than ten years from now if the trend keeps up and doubles every three years you should be able to buy around 64GB of RAM by 2025.
The same principle applies for hard drive storage price, in 2010 you could buy a 500 GB hard drive for about 50 dollars. Today you can buy a 1 TB (terabyte) hard drive for just a little over 50 dollars which is double the storage for the same price. That being said ten years from now if you use the same math used for RAM pricing based on Moore’s law and the chart on hard drive space and pricing over time then you should be able to buy around an 8 TB hard drive for 100 dollars. This also answers when we can expect to see a 100 TB hard drive hit the market. If you keep going with the trend then somewhere around 21 years from now we will see a 100 TB hard drive being sold, my personal opinion though is with the rapid advancement of technology it will not take that long.
