Waiting to Forget starts with TJ waiting in the emergency room, for his sister, Angela, looking at an old “memory book”. As Welch goes deeper into the story of TJ and Angela, we learn that TJ’s mother had moved from living in an apartment, when one day TJ’s mother hires a babysitter and when his mom didn’t come back for many hours the babysitter goes to a job interview. When a “strange” lady comes to the door and TJ opens the door, because he thought it his mom, she discovers TJ alone. ” When TJ wakes up one night and finds out that the boyfriend is a robber and has given Angela a valuable necklace to hide. TJ asked Angela about the necklace, she says that the boyfriend promised a parrot if she didn’t tell anyone. When TJ tells his mom about the necklace her boyfriend yells and hits Angela, then runs out. The cops are called, by the neighbors who heard the yelling. Angela acts like she just got done taking a shower. Neither TJ, Angela, nor the mom the truth about what happened. After a while TJ’s mom gets back together with the boyfriend and they go to Las Vegas, leaving TJ to take care of Angela. After Angela asks him to watch her get on the bus, because his mom does every day. As he watched Angela, TJ realizes there is no way his mom could have seen the bus stop. After a couple of days TJ’s mom doesn’t come back, so TJ calls the cops, telling them that she is dead. After being in many foster homes, their social worker showed them papers that proved TJ’s mother had relinquished her rights to TJ and Angela. Upon seeing his mom’s signature TJ yells that she is dead and tries to calm Angela. Shortly after TJ and Angela clam down, TJ’s mother calls, to say she is still alive. Finally they find their “forever” home, and get a parrot. Angela refuses to call their new parents “mom” and “dad” and tries constantly to release the parrot. Angela takes paper and folds them up to make paper swains like she did when she was in foster homes. When she gets in a fight with her parents she goes up stairs, with a paper swain, and stands on the balcony. After TJ attempts to get her off of the balcony, she falls and ends up in the emergency room. Which is where the story starts off at.
Welch has wrote a heart-touching novel. Parents and children will love Waiting to Forget.
