Introduction

When it comes to Web 2.0, there is no clear definition because it is something that is not planned or coordinated and has no launch date (Vines 2008). The exact definition of Web 2.0 is open to debate. Generally, Web 2.0 is seen to be the next generation of the Internet and is working closely side by side with Web 1.0. Underneath the Web 2.0 platform, the users will be able to see more technologies and solutions to enhance their online experience. The idea behind of Web 2.0 technology is to connect everything and everyone by all types of devices (The impact of..., n.d.). Not only user interaction characterises the Web 2.0 websites, one of the hallmarks is the sharing of knowledge. Users of Web 2.0 technologies are not mere users. They have become active participants in creating the content and the development of the websites. One example of this is the Wikipedia - ‘Wikipedia’s content is the product of interaction’. The materials on the Wikipedia websites are created by the users and he/she can edit or add in more ideas once he/she has log in to the website. In addition to this, users add value by building databases on the web and the more the people use them the better it will get.

In the past, users were largely restricted to only reading from the web pages and every time they click on another page, the page will have to load, which is very time consuming and increases the amount of data going back and forth between the computer and remote server. But now with the help of Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX), which is one of the Web 2.0 technologies, the web developer can design websites that eliminate the need to load the whole page which allows the sites to respond faster and also provide real time interaction for the users. For example, when the user has entered a wrong password, an error message will display instantly before the click of the login button. Another example is the ABC’s News website. Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs with user comments are being used and it will display relevant contents and most popular stories according to the user’s postcode. Users can also contribute to ABC News website by uploading videos, audios, photos and news event that the user has eyewitness. (Vine 2008)

Businesses have taken more notice of this new technology as there is a need to keep up with the changes to gain a competitive advantage both internally and externally. With Web 2.0 technology, companies can use it to enhance their business web site to have more interactions with their customers. Companies can also use existing Web 2.0 tools and websites such as YouTube and Wikipedia as marketing or support resources.

Externally

Firstly, the company can upload their product demonstrations video or presentations on YouTube and embed it to the company website. The company can not only provide on-site support but also real-time help and support to their clients, which will help reduce cost and is less time consuming compared to the past where the company has to make an appointment with their clients to do a on-site demonstration or presentation.
