I currently attend Blanche Ely High School for the sole purpose of graduating and fulfilling my long term goal of entering into the medical field. The section of the medical field that interests me the most is Sports Medicine. Sports Medicine is the field which involves the human body functions and movements. There are many different careers under this field which include dietitians, nutritionists, physical therapists and athletic trainers.
Dietitians and nutritionists plan food and nutrition programs, supervise meal preparation, and oversee the serving of meals. They prevent and treat illnesses by promoting healthy eating habits and recommending dietary modifications. They assess patients' nutritional needs, develop and implement nutrition programs, and evaluate and report the results. They also confer with doctors and other healthcare professionals to coordinate medical and nutritional needs.
Increased public interest in nutrition has led to job opportunities in food manufacturing, advertising, and marketing. In these areas, dietitians analyze foods, prepare books and studies for distribution, or report on issues such as dietary fiber, vitamin supplements, or the nutritional content of recipes. Dietitians and nutritionists usually work in clean, well-lighted, and well-ventilated areas and working in these types of conditions is essential because in their work areas they may have to handle food. However, some work in hot, congested kitchens. Many dietitians and nutritionists are on their feet for much of the workday. Most full-time dietitians and nutritionists work a standard 40-hour week.
A very famous nutritionists who was very popular in the early 90’s Adelle Davis, is known for writing a cook book, which ultimately sold over 10 million copies. Adelle has been quoted saying such sayings such as “Eat breakfast like a King, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper”, “Thousands upon thousands of persons have studied disease. Almost no one has studied health”, and “We are indeed much more than what we eat, but what we eat can nevertheless help us to be much more than what we are.”
In order to become a dietitian/nutritionist you must first graduate high school and earn a high school degree. The minimum requirement for a career as a dietitian is a Bachelors degree in dietetics, nutrition or another health science field. To earn these degrees you must sacrifice 4 years of your life at a qualifying college or university taking courses such as human nutrition, experimental foods, medical nutrition therapy, food service organization and quantity food production.
