Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder. This phrase first appeared in Greece in the third century BC and is still believed by people today. With today's society’s standards, though, who is the beholder? The media produced all around us makes beauty seem like some big thing and that all people should look the way a model looks on a billboard or in a magazine. What kind of message is this? If you don't like the way your body looks, just try to make it look like that supermodel you saw! This is an awful way of portraying beauty to youth, so really, what exactly is beauty? There are many different views on what beauty is all over the world.

Society has failed to realize that this can’t be reality for most people. Anyone can reach a healthy weight through exercise and a healthy diet, but this could be such a faster process if you look at a model in a magazine and say “I need to look like him/her!” Not every person will have smooth skin, but it’s achievable with all the skin products made by companies to make people feel beautiful. The perception of beauty in the modern day has been distorted beyond repair (Jones).
In different nations around the world, various physical appearances are considered beautiful. In Thailand and Burma, elongated necks produced by golden rings placed around the neck are seen as beautiful. Ethiopian girls in the Karo tribe receive scarring on their stomachs at a young age to be considered for marriage later in life. Some African and Amazonian tribes stretch the lips with different sized plates to accentuate their beauty. A very popular view of beauty is the act of foot binding in China. Chinese foot binding was done to make females seem empowered as small feet signified richness and royalty. To achieve bound and tiny feet, the bones in the foot were broken before being wrapped in bandages. Woman suffered critical pain and had difficulty walking (Bryant). Who knew something that could be seen as gross or scary to us could be seen as beautiful to another group of people?
