Why Did The King Make The Flight To Varennes?
The flight of King Louis is best explained by an accumulation of long term and short term causes, based on the beliefs and intentions of people at the time, and the existing conditions in France at that time.
The French people were against the King as they believed in the ideals of the new constitution; fraternity, liberty and equality. And the new constitution greatly decreased teh kings power, it even changed his title to King of French. This was done because it was felt Louis should rule for the French people not just for the privileged few, and they thought he couldn’t do this in Versailles with so many distractions, so they moved him to Paris where they could watch him and what he was doing. This action of moving the king to Tuileries was the ...view middle of the document...
One such country was Austria. Austria was willing to help Louis as his wife Marie Antoinette was a member of the Austrian royal family. Leopold II, the Austrian leader at the time, agreed to meet Louis at Varennes where he could joinf ofirces with Austrian troops and overthrow the revolution.
The only reason the king was able to be moved to Paris, was because of what was going on at the time in France. The background situation in France was the long term establishment of the new constitution. This led to a great decrease in the Kings power, as he was no longer ruling by Divine Right under the Ancien Regime. However the King still believed he should be able to rule as a complete monarch, which led him to try to escape and regroup with his Austrian relatives in Varennes so they could support him and crush the revolution thus returning Louis to his former power.
The new constitution also impeded on the acts of the church as it was influenced by The Enlightenment, the belief of reason over tradition. The constitution made priests swear oaths to the state over God, and sold off the lands of the church. Louis didn’t agree with this as it went against everything he had been taught to believe under the Ancien Regime as he was taught the only person above him was God and that God was of upmost importance and took priority over everything else. This led him to flee as he wanted to get away form this and try and prevent it.
I believe the main reason the King fled Paris was because of the New Constitution. If the constitution was as prohibiting as it was, it would not have affected King Louis as much as it did so would have created no need for him to want to end the revolution by joining his Austrian allies and crush the revolution.
