“Why is the initial consultation so important? What factors will an ethical
therapist cover at this time?”
Word count: x,xxx (x,xxx with references)
In all walks of life, the first time we meet someone is significant as this is the time
when we form our first impressions of people, which then dictates whether or not
we feel we will be able to develop a rapport with that person. As the saying goes,

In order to demonstrate why the initial consultation is so important, the following
essay will discuss the factors that an ethical therapist will cover with their client
when meeting for the first time.
It is well documented that the initial consultation is beneficial to establishing a good
rapport and aiding relaxation in the client in order for therapy to be as successful as
possible (Heap & Naish, 2012:1; Waterfield, 2002:18). It has also been shown that
this time provides an opportunity for the therapist to assess the client’s primary
modalities by observing their non-verbal behaviour to begin to develop an
appropriate delivery style for therapy. Building on that though is the fact that the
initial consultation is the prime time to gather as much relevant information about
the client as possible and to give the client information about the hypnotherapy
process and answer any questions they may have.
Most therapists will often use a notation form to gather all the information they
require in order to begin therapy with a new client. This form helps to keep records
consistent and will include basic information such as the client’s full name and
address and their GP name and/or surgery address, which are required for insurance

purposes, as well as other contact information and the client’s preferred method of
being contacted. An ethical therapist will always be aware and respectful of the fact
that the patient may not want family members or colleagues to know that they are
