Wide Area Networks

The creation of wide area networks links mass communication from people all over the world with a vast variety of different uses. “A wide area network is telecommunications networks covering a large geographic area.” The internet is the biggest example of a wide area network and has influenced our daily lives all around the world. Wide area networks are connected to local area networks to enable computers to share, send, and access information on a larger scale. These recent technologies over the past 20 years have affected the way we communicate, how businesses operate, and many other factors that we take for granted. Wide area networks are a fast growing ...view middle of the document...

” There are five major aspects that explain the connections between wide are networks. These five types of connections are Point-to-Point Links, Circuit Switching, Packet Switching, WAN Virtual Circuits, and WAN Dialup Services. “Point-to-point links provide a single, pre-established WAN communications path from the customer premises through a carrier network, such as a telephone company, to a remote network.” The lines are designated for this connection and usually run on leased lines but are typically more expensive than a service which is shared. Circuit switching enables data connections when the user goes to access another network. Like a telephone line the connection is linked by a router and when this information is allowed by circuit switches the router accesses the data transmits a connection. This connection actually makes a call and connects similar to a phone call. Once the information is translated and sent the user cancels the connection when they are finished. “Packet switching is a WAN technology in which users share common carrier resources.” Packet switching has carrier networks that allow people with this feature to share from this network. These carrier networks hold packets of information that can be accessed by many customers at any time. WAN virtual clients work with a virtual circuit which is a logical circuit created within a shared network between two network devices. The two types of virtual circuits are switched virtual circuits and permanent virtual circuits. Switched virtual circuits are circuits established when needed and ended when completed. Permanent virtual circuits are connected at all times for data transmission. Lastly WAN dial up services is the cheapest and most common connection to a wide area network. The two types of WAN dial up services are dial on demand routing and dial back up. Dial on demand routing is a call placed to a switched circuit which evaluates criteria, allows a connection and allows the router to transfer information. A dial backup is another switched circuit which helps maintain a connection that is lost. The dial backup is initiated using a point to point or packet switching connection which allows it to work until the original connection is restored. There are many devices which allow these connections to take place and can be modified in order to best meet the needs of the consumers.

Wide area networks are important because they interlink networks for businesses, create businesses, easily access information to various people, reduce costs of telecommunications, distribute research all around the world and keep people better connected to the information available. WAN allows numerous functions to be available for many specific needs. This technology changed the way people access and share information.
