Understanding Drama! Essay

2870 words - 12 pages The question asked is what is drama? Can we truly define it? Is there a textbook definition of something that can be so personal? What is drama in relation to theatre? Why is drama so important? What are its uses, its aims? Some have said that drama develops self-esteem and encourages creativity and imagination. This is true, and will be demonstrated through examples from personal experiences. Usually the first thing that occurs in a drama class is that someone will ask for a definition of the word drama. Most of the class will look away, as if in deep thought praying that they are not called on, because they do not know the answer. At first glance, it seems a simple question, but as one VIEW DOCUMENT

Drama Fairytales and Their Use Essay

1499 words - 6 pages According to the NCCA (1999) Revised Primary Drama Curriculum, “The essence of drama is the making of story through enactment. The answer to the question ‘what’s the story?’ will always lead to the making of a plot (a series of actions and events) with a theme (a focus for reflection). Successful drama will reflect life in a realistic or metaphorical way.” The value of this ‘pretend’ play is recognised by many. Parts and Structure of Drama Essay

1842 words - 8 pages Q#1: Greek plays originate from the time of festivities in the honour of god Dionysius. Discuss. The origins of Greek theatre lie in the revels of the followers of Dionysus, a god of fertility and wine. In keeping with the god's special interests, his cult ceremonies are exciting occasions. His female devotees, in particular, dance themselves into a state of frenzy. Carrying long phallic symbols, known as thyrsos, they tear to pieces and devour the raw flesh of sacrificial animals. Historians say the greatest Athenian contribution to literature was the rise of drama. Greek drama was a product of the worship of the god Dionysus. How does Shakespeare use language and dramatic devices to bring out its full dramatic potential? Romeo and Juliet is a play that deals with love and conflict. No matter how romantic or poetic the play is it still presents the drama of hatred as much as the drama of love.
