Is Darwin’s Idea of Natural Selection the Greatest Idea Ever?
In Daniel Dennet’s book Darwin’s Dangerous Idea: Evolution and Meanings of Life, Dennet argues that the Darwinian processes are the single best idea ever had. While this statement is undoubtedly controversial, much truth surrounds it. Many may argue for the ideas brought to life by Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein. However, none of these two geniuses’ concepts have proven to be so straightforward yet profound. Charles Darwin’s ideas of natural selection are the greatest concept because these ideas have brought together so much complexity into stunning simplicity. Darwin’s theories have unified social science and natural

A BIG IDEA
Over the past decade or more many governments, especially western governments, have taken steps to draw together a wide range of different functions, objectives and institutions under the concept of ‘national security’. This trend is driven by two simple ideas. First, countries and their citizens face many different types of security threats, and they all need to be taken seriously and given due attention and priority. Second, government has many different types of policy instruments that can be used to manage this range of security threats, and they can and should all be used in the most cost-effective combination to address the full range of security challenges. From these two

The Idea of ImaginationImitation is the peak of human innovation; it is the peak of all of creation as we are limited to what is around us. As a society all we can do is take from others and from what is around us, using nature as our guide and an example in life. Nothing is truly creative, but rather it is taken from somewhere else. In Susan Blackmore's essay "Strange Creatures" she talks about imitation, and the extent of the human mind and creativity. At the same time Adam Gopnik's essay "Bumping into Mr. Ravioli" gives us insight and examples of imitation throughout society that we simply overlook. As a society we are so focused on growing our inventions that we rarely stop to see its

Upon his return to London Darwin concluded thorough research of his notes and specimens many ideas. Out of this study grew several related theories: one, evolution did occur, two, evolutionary change was gradual, requiring thousands to millions of years, three, the primary mechanism for evolution was a process called natural selection, and four, the millions of species alive today arose from a single original life form through a branching process called "specialization."
The movie Darwin’s Dangerous Idea was based on Darwin’s theory of evolution. It talked all about how Darwin truly did believe that evolution did exist and how many philosophers denied

This idea basically says that if you have a pendulum swinging back and forth on the same plane, its path will gradually rotate over the course of time. According to Foucault, the back and forth movements of the pendulum will constantly turn beyond the point of making a full rotation. But because of many factors, including the friction of the air, it is extremely difficult to actually experiment with a real pendulum- it eventually loses momentum and the swinging comes to an end. This principle was applied to the movement of the Earth and it helped prove that our planet is indeed turning.

The main reasons he gives are in response to claims made by the ‘legalisers’. The legalisers claim that marijuana is an already approved hospital medicine, America has already lost the drug war, it is a mistake to criminalise the behaviour of so many people, legalisation would not increase the number of drug addicts, and young people could be excluded from the freemarket for legal drugs. In response the author claims that the narrow widow of marijuana legitimacy in medicine could potentially be

Not only does she exploit all the psychological wrongs that all the ads in magazines do to women, she clearly states that ad companies clearly do this in order to raise their personal income. If women feel terrible about themselves, they go out and spend millions on beauty products in order to fit into the airbrushed stereotype they see.

Many public schools in America are making students wear school uniforms. Uniforms were first instituted in 16th century England at the charity schools for the poor children. It was not until the 19th century that the great English public schools began instituting uniforms and even later for them to be widely accepted at state schools, especially elementary schools. In the 20th century, schools all over the world adopted this trend. American schools have avoided school uniforms for generations but started to see uniforms in schools in the 1980’s. These categories allow managers to create value, organize effectiveness, monitor performance, develop innovative ideas, and drive for results. No one organization or manager can perform all of these functions on their own on a daily basis-unless they are the only one employed there. The four elements of management can be split into upper and lower tiers with responsibility and titles. For an idea to be perceived as a good one – does it need to be completely new, or incredibly useful. Maybe it needs to be both. Are the ‘new’ ideas that people are thinking of actually just revitalised versions of an already existing idea? Or do people not have enough experience in the field of ‘creative thinking’ and give up too easy? It is inevitable that people perceive creativity in different ways, but this essay will explore and discuss the debate of ideas, the process of ideas, and the importance of ideas obtaining worth and reasoning.

This is partly due to the fact that science and philosophy only separated about the time evolutionary theories were being first proposed, but also because - especially in the Darwinian context - evolution was opposed to many cherished philosophical doctrines. The first main criticisms of evolution lay in the idea that species were eternal types, and so by definition species could not change. More recently, criticisms have rested on the notion of science itself, that evolution fails to meet the standards of true science, views that also were expressed at the time of Darwin and earlier. If we are to understand these criticisms, we must understand the philosophy of science in some detail. Many

The idea of consent is a key element in the works of John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In the "Second Treatise of Government," Locke puts forth his conception of the ideal form of government based on a social contract. As Locke develops his theory of consent, he also incorporates theories of political obligation on the part of all citizens of his state as well as his theory of revolution and the conditions under which rebellion is permissible. Though Locke may appear to have explored the notion of consent completely, there are some problems with his theory that weaken its impact. Despite the possible problems encountered with

Dr. Johnson, thought by many to be the leading intellectual of the 18th century, “considered factual ‘scientific learning’ among the best types of knowledge a man could possess”, and thus it is no wonder the poets of the age – who imagined themselves to be at the forefront of intellectual thought – were greatly influenced by the nascent legitimacy science had found within society in this period (Rousseau 163). In Meditation VI Descartes considers the relationship between the cause of an idea and the idea itself in terms of the “formal” or ‘eminent’ reality in the cause and the ‘objective’ reality in the idea. Formal reality is the kind of reality something has by virtue of the kind of thing it is, while the objective reality is possessed only by representations, that is, by things that stand for other things. In essence a thing has objective reality, for Descartes, if it is a representation of something. For example, a bird is objectively real, and to say that the bird, as the cause of my idea, has formal reality is to say that it has the represented properties that my idea has in actual fact
